Alaska High Friction Surface Treatment

ACC West Coast was hired by QAP General Contractors to apply approximately 13,000 square yards of High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) to new roadway surfaces at two locations for the Alaska Department of Transportation.

One location, on the Parks Highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks, provides access to Denali National Park and is open year-round. Within sight of the highest mountain in North America, the location includes a series of sweeping curves, and has a history of roadway departure crashes, especially during wet or icy weather conditions. Our HFST application was part of a safety improvement program to reduce these crashes on this critical but dangerous stretch of highway.

High Friction Surface Treatment is a combination of very high strength polymer resin and extremely durable and angular calcined bauxite aggregate bonded to the pavement surface. ACC West Coast has designed and built a fully automated HFST placement machine capable of simultaneously placing both the resin binder and calcined bauxite at high-production. At this location, the installation of HFST provided a new driving surface with more than twice the original roadway friction.
